James Galanos couture pleated print dress and jacket in silver and black silk from the 1980s. A well known fact about James Galanos dresses, as stated by Nancy Regan, they were as beautifully made on the inside as out. As close to European couture as American fashion would ever get, the quality of the design and workmanship is a thing of beauty. This jacket and dress is done in a coordinating print of light silver hounds tooth check and a black and silver modernist Ikat influenced pattern the dress is conservative yet avant garde. The dress has a high round yoke neckline, the dress front in done in restrained open pleats, that are hand stitched from the yoke to the hem. The long sleeves are gathered into banded cuffs that have decorative rhinestone buttons and snaps to close, there is one missing rhinestone on one of the buttons. The dress has padded shoulders. The dress back is not pleated and falls straight from the shoulder to the hem. The dress closes at the front with two rhinestone buttons set in silver metal, with a hidden hand set zipper below. The coordinating jacket fabric matches the yoke and cuffs of the dress. This beautifully made dress is completely made by hand, even the taped interior seams are hand stitched. The jacket is done in the darker black and silver fabric, it has a jewel neckline and closes at the front with a rhinestone button close to the neck front and a tab at the waist with a matching rhinestone button, it closes with hidden snaps, there are some pulls to the fabric at the inside, not seen from the front. The jacket has long semi full sleeves with rhinestone button cuffs that close with hidden snaps, one button has 2 missing rhinestones. The jacket is gathered at the hem edge and dips at the center back. The torso is self lined, the sleeves are unlined. The jacket has padded shoulders.
