Victorian white cotton ruched, broderie Anglaise and eyelet bed jacket from the 1890s. This beautiful piece is an example of bed clothes worn by women of the time, to cover their modesty, while still being able to be comfortable without corsets and layers of clothing. I purchased this years ago from the family of the original owner who wore it when receiving family visitors after the birth of her first child. Similar garments are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. In excellent condition for it's age, it is completely wearable. Handmade with some machine stitching. Closes at the front to lower waist, with mother of pearl buttons, it is stitched closed to the hem. Yoke shoulder jacket (dropped shoulder) is a mixture of ruched cotton with embroidered eyelet and broderie anglaise trims, the work continues down the front of the jacket. There is a little collar at the neck. The jacket is gathered below the yoke and very full to the hem. Shaped sleeves are full, with embroidered cuffs. Unlined. In excellent wearable condition. All our clothing is dry cleaned and inspected for condition and is ready to wear. Any condition issues will be noted. For visual comparison our mannequin is a size 4.
