Fernanda Gattinoni Couture Ivory pleated silk chiffon evening gown from the late 1950s. In 1906, 17 year old Fernanda Gattinoni left Italy for London to apprentice at the Molineaux fashion house, a leading atelier of the day. She turned down an offer of a job with the French designer Coco Chanel in the late 1920s. She went on to open her own couture house in Italy in 1945. She became an international success in the 1950s, when Rome, neorealism and directors like Roberto Rossellini and the film actresses that starred in these films descended on the City and discovered her designs, soon Italian labels became de rigueur among the international jet set. She dressed Gina Lollobrigida, Angie Dickinson and Anna Magnani among others, and was nominated for an Oscar for the costumes she designed for Audrey Hepburn in War and Peace (1956). She was known for her pleated chiffon gowns many were exhibited in Paris in 2010 at the Italian Cultural Center, her designs were also featured in the 2014 exhibit, The Golden Age of Italian Fashion. This elegant and amazing gown in ivory silk chiffon can be seen at the exhibit in Paris in the last photo.
