Zandra Rhodes Coquille Print Pleated Caftan and Maxi Dress from the 1970s. Zandra Rhodes was one of the new wave of British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene in the 1970s. Her designs are creative, her textile designs delve into nature and the unconventional, her use of colour is delicious!
The design of this caftan is unique pleats, angles and flow, the accordion pleated sleeves form the bodice front and back, the pleating gives soft drape and movement. The long pleated skirt is attached at the empire waist and the pleats fall tighter at the waist to full and flaring at the hem. The robe/caftan is open at the front and closes with self tie cords. The stand up collar and facings are done in a narrow self fabric pleated ruffle.
The matching dress is sleeveless with a plunge neckline, the shoulder tops are round gathered bands of pleated fabric ruffles that are open in the center showing some skin. The empire bodice is slightly fitted, the v and sleeves are trimmed in narrow ruffles of pleated self fabric, there is cased elastic under the bust and long cord ties. The skirt falls to the hem in a soft drape.
Both pieces are unlined and done in a light almost gauzy fabric. The fabric ground is a coral red with pale pink squiggly lines throughout and blue scallop shells.
